We are one of four First Lego League teams part of the robotics program at the Muslim American Society (MAS) in Dallas, Texas. Our mission is to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) focused education, training, and mentoring with an emphasis on tarbiya.
Our team, The Marvels of MAS is a 2nd year team with a mix of new and old members. This team is lead by Coach Lama Abu-Amara.
We expand our STEM knowledge through competing in the FIRST Lego League competition.
FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a robotics community that prepares young people for the future through a suite of inclusive, team-based robotics programs for ages 4-18 (PreK-12) that can be facilitated in school or in structured afterschool programs. Boosted by a global support system of volunteers, educators, and sponsors that include over 200 of the Fortune 500 companies, teams operate under a signature set of FIRST Core Values to conduct research, fundraise, design, build, and showcase their achievements during annual challenges.
Problem: Remote communities, due to immense distances and rugged terrain are disconnected from the interconnected electrical grids that provide bulk reliable electricity. A lot of these communities must rely on producing their own electricity using renewable energy such as using solar panels. However, when living in a climate that is constantly raining, solar panels are not an option.
Solution: We propose using the gutters on houses to redirect water into a micro hydro electric system to produce electricity. We took pictures of gutters to come up with a gutter design that directs water to a simple intake box. Water from our intake box gets filtered to get rid of the debris using a self cleaning rotating filter. The water is then collected into a reservoir that feeds water into a Francis turbine that powers a generator.
